According to Wikipedia Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing cognition, perception, and behaviour. It likewise determines how an individual handles stress, interpersonal relationships, and decision making.

    Our View

🧿 Whatever jobs we do or whatever our challenges are, we all tend to lead very busy lives.

🧿 Unfortunately this is all too often at the detriment of our physical and mental health.

🧿 How often do you feel really stressed because you’re overworked, under appreciated and worse still when you get home you’ve taken the job home with you?

🧿 It’s an uninvited guest that partners, family and friends rarely welcome.

🧿 What they see is anger, moodiness, no patience and someone who’s not really in the room with them.

Why Mental Health in the Workplace Matters?

Figures from the charity, Mind suggest that 60% of Employees say they’d feel more motivated and more likely to recommend their organisation as a good place to work if their employer took action to support mental wellbeing.

They’ve also developed a 3 point-plan to help employers manage mental health in the workplace.

    1. Promoting wellbeing for all staff
    2. Tackling the causes of work-related mental health problems.
    3. Supporting staff who are experiencing mental health problems.

What Can We Do About It?

    • Make sure that you are eating regularly
    • Make time to talk to or see friends and family
    • Make time to exercise, it could be something as simple as walking the dog.
    • Make time for something that you enjoy doing.

    The Benefits of Taking Action

    The Benefits

By making more time for yourself you will:

    • Be less likely to burn yourself out.
    • You’ll feel better about yourself.
    • You’ll get more done.
    • You’re likely to be more successful.

If you’re Job Hunting the Mental Health situation can often be worse!

What Can Job Candidates Do to Improve Their Own Mental Health?

We all know that job hunting becomes a job in itself  but when you factor in financial pressures it can become downright unbearable.

    Therefore try these strategies:

    • It’s so important to make a plan for your job search
    • Take each day as it comes to ensure you don’t put yourself under too much pressure.
    • Before you even start applying for jobs do your research and find out about yourself. What jobs match your interests, desires, skills, your ideals and what type of workplace would be right for you?
    • Try to do regular exercise, helps you to release that stress.

      In Conclusion

It’s becoming increasing clearer from the various surveys and feedback from Job Candidates and Employees that mental health and wellbeing are very high up on the list of desirable benefits.

We’ve seen this first hand from the companies featured in our Employers Register who offer great mental health benefits to potential Employees.

Flexible working arrangements are also playing into this as it means, more time spent with family and less commuting.

The way this is playing out is that those employers and recruiters that are reaching out to Job Candidates and Employees with great wellbeing packages are the clear winners. As they are attracting the best talent.
