How Content Marketing Helps Your Career Progress

Leverage the power of creating and posting professional content to secure your career and ensure its steady growth. By building a viable, visible brand, you will become an industry leader and receive access to opportunities you could only dream about.
Working with jobseekers for over five years now, I noticed an unfortunate tendency of underrating the potential impact of quality content on one’s career progression. Even though it is an excellent way to showcase your expertise in front of hiring decision makers, many of those who think about making the next career move still believe that content is just a waste of time. Please don’t make this mistake – draw inspiration from the stories of people who landed new roles, projects and gigs thanks to their content marketing efforts.
Whether we’re talking about posting articles or status updates, launching podcasts or YouTube channels, or creating your own blog, content is a drive that propels your professional self-establishment in a digital space and attracts opportunities that otherwise would have never popped up for you.
Going to the basics, content represents a piece of information communicated in a text, audio or video (visual) format. Different forms of content include articles, blogs, social media posts, graphics and infographics, newsletters, podcasts, videos, etc. Now let’s discuss in detail how exactly creating and sharing content can accelerate your career development and what outcomes it may bring.
Content Marketing for Your Career
You Position Yourself as an Expert in your Niche

Story #1. David was one of my favourite clients – open to advice, responsive, and willing to do whatever it took to get a job in the FinTech sector. After updating his LinkedIn profile, we decided to fill in the content gap by posting an article. An excerpt from his recent MBA paper, it perfectly showed David’s deep knowledge of financial market dynamics as well as his tech-savviness.
Soon he received an offer from the FinTech company he targeted. They said his article helped them make a decision based on whether he possessed the right expertise and was a good fit for the role. He’s been employed there happily ever after.
I understand how busy you are. I know how time-consuming content creation can be, but it shouldn’t. Following David’s example, begin with something simple. Look through your notes. Repurpose your old content. Do an audio recording of your thoughts, transform it into text using voice recognition software, and here you go – you already have something to publish.
Your initial content marketing efforts will not require building a standalone blog or a website – LinkedIn Publisher is an excellent alternative. One article at a time is a good start. Blocking 2-3 hours weekly or monthly to produce something new is even better. When people Google you, your creative works will appear in searches, showing that you care for your own online image and are ready to share your expertise with others.

You become a Thought Leader

Story #2. People knew Deepak as a great mentor with immense expertise in the areas of Finance and Risk. He actively posted videos on LinkedIn, shared updates with in-depth analyses of global economic risks, and even started his own blog.
His willingness to help people and provide valuable advice was truly admirable. All his hard work came into fruition when he received an offer from one of the major publishers in London to co-author a book. Eventually, he also got a job there and settled down for good.
This approach of using different forms of content allows covering a broader audience and communicating your message through a variety of channels. Choose two or three ones depending on your industry and ensure consistent content flow to build up your SEO and market outreach in an organic way.
While doing so, make it your priority to help, support, inform, and enlighten. Tell your story and show how it worked for you. In this case, people will not only remember you as someone who knows his/her stuff really well. They will also see you as a thought leader focused on adding value and making a difference.
Your Next best Job will find You

Story #3. I’ve known Rachel (virtually) for quite a while by seeing her content on LinkedIn and Instagram nearly every day. Coming across as a Virtual Assistant, she knew what she was talking about when it came to helping with social media activity, handling online correspondence, or quickly finding required information.
Her advice was always spot on. Her videos and graphics encouraged further engagement. No surprise, when I was asked to recommend a VA, her name was number one popping up in my head.
That’s right. In some cases, you don’t look for a job. The job finds you because, as you work on your personal brand by becoming and staying visible, you will get noticed, recognized and acknowledged by the right people.
It won’t be an exaggeration to say that when you frequently appear on people’s screens (no matter if it’s their social media, Google search, or other digital outlets), you appear in their minds too. They feel like they already know you, which mean they already trust you and your expertise. Furthermore, they are ready to come to you or recommend your services to others.
Content is King

Invest some of your time in becoming a content creator, and it will bring an impressive ROI (Return of Investment) in the long run. By doing it in advance, before starting the actual job search, you build a foundation, even a legacy anyone can tap into and find something valuable.
That basically means:
🔶 You are safe when your potential employer does your social media audit
🔶 You can make a great impression when someone Googles you
🔶 You stand out among other applicants during job interviews
🔶 You already have a portfolio when asked for it
🔶 You have a capacity to reflect on industry trends and dynamics
🔶 You positively influence your future and the future of others.
In combination with other job search activities, content marketing is a fantastic means that forms your digital footprint and takes you to the next level in your career by bringing attention to what you have to offer. Don’t overlook it. Start today. It’s easier than you think. And be sure to send me the links to your publications!
